American because it goes where I want to go.The days of the good air lines are over.In the 60’s and 70’s you were treated like royalty on a plane.Now your Lucky to get a bag of nut!

I think the best airline in the United States, from a service perspective, is JetBlue. JetBlue is a maverick company in the airline industry, doing things differently than the competition. Their flight attendants are very polite and courteous, and of course, there is DirecTV service at every seat during your flight. Since most JetBlue flights are cross-country, it’s a very entertaining way to spend 3-6 hours in the air. Sadly, I don’t get to fly them often, because I live in the Midwest, where they don’t have a very big presence yet.
I think Southwest is an excellent example of a great airline too. They’ve found their market niche…low fares, no-frills service…basic transportation at a fair price. Because they don’t assign seats, they can turn an airplane around faster at the airport, and that, in turn, means they can get one or two more revenue-generating flights out of each aircraft every day.
I think the Big Six (American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, US Airways) are doomed. They’ve never been able to get their labor costs under control. Delta and TWA (now part of American) used to be, in my opinion, the two best service-oriented airlines in the US. Now, what remains of both companies is a pathetic shadow of what used to be. The morale at the Big Six is at an all-time low, and the management of the Big Six is stuck in the pre-deregulation rut.
Look for Delta to cease operations sometime later this year, and Northwest will wind up getting acquired by another airline. Of the Big Six, when all is said and done, we’ll see American and United survive long-term, and they will need to reinvent themselves if they’re going to stay competitive with the new breed of airline (JetBlue, Southwest). Look for new startups to kick butt and take names.
While I believe JetBlue is the best airline, I fly American mostly. That’s because of the Frequent Flyer program. It’s not the miles, it’s the Elite Status. Fly at least 30 segments a year (about eight round-trips if you make connections) and they’ll start giving you perks like free First-Class upgrades, bonus miles, discounts on the Airline Club Lounge memberships, etc. I feel like Pavlov’s dog pressing the feeder bar, but I’ll be darned if it doesn’t work just like the marketing folks say it does. I always try to fly American first, unless there’s such a huge fare difference that I can’t justify it in my own mind.

I have flown them all, and from a customer service standpoint Southwest is best for the majors. Regional airline- Skywest Airlines has the best customer service.
