Wholesalers of airline tickets are usually called ‘consolidators’. At times they are also known as ‘bucket shops’. This happens specifically in England and few other countries among the British Commonwealth. Most Sunday newspapers will contain ads for give away air fares. The wholesalers basically buy large amounts of tickets at a very low rate. When airfare is bought in bulk at a price especially discounted for missionary or group travel purposes then it is referred to as wholesale airfare. Airliners indulge in this exchange in order to make some money for every seat that is available by selling these tickets wholesale to the consolidators at discounts that can up to 90%. Some consolidators as well as bucket shops sell the tickets to the public directly. Others provide the wholesale airline tickets specifically to travel agencies only. Either way, the rate of each ticket is already marked up to be beneficial in terms of profit to the bucket shops, consolidators and travel agents when they sell the tickets. Still, the consumer is at a profit when buying the tickets from these third parties in terms of saving on air fares. This whole wholesale discount airfare is available only when you buy a minimum of four tickets or more. This way, consolidators who buy wholesale tickets from airlines are more eligible for bigger discounts.

Consolidators and bucket shops do not always have flights on all routes or for all destinations as they usually serve prominent gateway cities. If a certain consolidator does not provide tickets to the place you want to go, then you can enquire with the travel agency about getting a consolidator ticket for yourself. The travel agent will have contacts with many consolidators and so will be able to get you your bargain ticket at a little mark up from what you would actually spend on directly buying it from the bucket shop. Like any other discounted fares, consolidator airfares are available for the economy or coach class rather than for the first class or business class seats. Usually, they apply to certain flights that have stop over’s instead of direct route flights. Consolidators are a great source of last minute deals when you are about to fly in the coming few days. But since wholesale airline tickets do not get cheaper when your travel date is close by, it is best you plan ahead of time. You can beat the penalty you need to pay if you need to fly within the next 3 weeks. Also the prices of wholesale airline tickets vary depending on the travel season. During peak vacation period, consolidators and bucket shops are your best bet at discounted international airfares; however, the cheapest airfares are available during off season travelling. There is a downside to buying consolidator tickets of bucket shop tickets. Most of these tickets do not offer you frequent flyer mileage. But the amount of money you save on bargain tickets makes up for it anyway.

Searching the internet for some wholesale airfare offers has eased out over the years for travellers with real time ticket availability as an option. In many of the cases, all of the flight’s details including the timings of the flight, the location of the seat, the name of the airline etc. are information that is rarely available before the purchase of the airline ticket. Some travel operators will let you hunt for wholesale airfare that matches your requirements. So, the next time you try to search for cheap airfares make sure you read the instructions that are involved in buying the flight tickets.

Many consolidator airfares are non refundable in nature while some consolidator airfares are non changeable in nature. Passenger name alterations are usually not allowed on these types of bargain tickets either. Most airlines don’t even waive the rates of penalties on any sort of bargain tickets even for medical reasons or passenger accidents or other such reasons. If you are fine with these restrictions then consolidators are your best chance at saving money while travelling by air.

Dealing with consolidators on the internet is a lot like dealing with other businesses on the internet. They offer different degrees of services and dependability. Make sure you have some way of contacting the company you have chosen other than the internet. If they don’t not offer any telephonic support to their clients then try to avoid doing business with them. Check if they have been in business for at least a while. Also, local addresses show stability. You can contact the Better Business Bureau to get a reliability report on the company you are looking at for bargain tickets. Or you can check for the Better Business Bureau seal on the company’s website and a link might be provided there for you to verify the validity of the seal.
